Skip the sugar rush this year with these 45+ Candy Free Easter Ideas.
Just when the kid’s stash of Christmas and Valentine’s candy starts to disappear, another sugar-rush holiday approaches. Easter. That doesn’t need to be the case though, there are plenty of things that you can hide besides chocolate eggs and bunnies.
Over the years, we’ve done a few different things with our kids. For egg hunts, we like to use the plastic refillable eggs. To make sure the oldest and youngest get the same amount of eggs, I mark the child’s first initial on each egg with a permanent marker. If they stumble across one that isn’t theirs, they just leave it for the other person to find and move on.
What can you fill those plastic eggs with instead of candy? How about:
- small Lego set or small puzzle (divide the pieces between a few eggs)
- ring
- temporary tattoos
- nail polish
- stickers
- coins
- lip balm
- jacks & ball
- bouncy ball
- Silly Putty
- erasers
- googly eyes
- key chain
- small toy cars
- Rainbow Loom bands
- hair clips
- small compass
- carabineer
- colourful Band-Aids
- Yo-Yo
- parachuting bunnies (or men)
- small bottles of bubbles
- hacky sack
- pair of earrings
- whistle
- mini Slinky
Or, instead of having a treat in each egg, you could print out these cute Easter jokes and put one in each egg. They are sure to crack your kids up. 😉
Another great activity, that also helps your children learn the real meaning of Easter, is this Easter Scripture Egg Activity. Each egg has a different scripture verse, and a visual, as you follow the story of Christ’s death and resurrection.
You could also abandon the plastic eggs all together, and have a fun treasure hunt by cutting out egg shapes from colourful paper. On each piece of paper write a clue that would lead them to finding another clue. My kids have loved when we have done this in the past, it seems the hunt can never be long enough.
that go ’round and ’round,
if you move fast enough,
Your feet leave the ground.
The kids love figuring out the clues, and they work together as a team to find the next hidden clue. This can go as long or as short as you want, and the last clue can lead them to a filled Easter basket or gift bag.
So, what types of things can you add to their basket that isn’t candy? Here are some things we’ve done in the past:
- new spring t-shirt
- sunglasses
- kite
- beach towel
- bubbles
- hula hoop
- sunhat
- colouring/activity book
- Bible
- sidewalk chalk
- a movie
- skipping rope
- sandals
- magazine
- soccer ball or basketball
- garden gloves/shovel
- Frisbee
No matter what you decide to do with your kids this Easter, I hope that you take the time to reflect on the great Gift that was given to us so many years ago. He is Risen, He is Risen indeed!
What are some of your favourite Easter morning memories? Do you have any special traditions, or partake in a fabulous brunch? Let me know, I’d love to hear it.
